Gimbal
Sergeant Gimbal (The King’s Hand)
Consolidated Character Document — Merge of “Chains Cha Gimbal” Docs 1, 2, and 3
How to Read This Document
Chains Cha Gimbal 1 is the master. Its content forms the spine of every section below and is presented first, unchanged. Material that exists only in Doc 2 or Doc 3 has been folded in where it belongs. Where a source contradicts the master, the master reading stays in the body text and the conflicting reading is preserved in a shaded VARIANT box (or a comparison table) directly beneath it, so nothing is lost and you can resolve each conflict by hand.
Per your instructions, the only edits made are to proper names for people, places, and things, normalized to the master’s Basque naming system. Everything else is carried over as written. A full list of name changes and every open inconsistency appears in Section XII: Editor’s Notes at the end.

III. Background & History
The master does not contain a standalone background section; its history is embedded in the 3 Chains (Section VIII) and the Hero’s Journey (Section IX). The narrative below is from Doc 3, with names normalized. Points of conflict with the master are flagged beneath it.
Gimbal was born in King's Port, a bustling village known for its mechanical ingenuity and tight-knit community. His parents were skilled teachers adored by the children and their families. Gimbal displayed remarkable coordination and leadership skills as a child, often organizing games and patrols with the other village children.
This idyllic life shattered when King's Port was destroyed in a sudden, devastating kobold raid. Gimbal was one of the few survivors, narrowly escaping with the help of the village's system of subterranean escape tunnels. The event left him haunted, his memories fragmented and hazy—a defense mechanism against the overwhelming trauma of watching his home and loved ones annihilated.
Gimbal joined the Oceanport Regional Militia as he grew older, determined to prevent other villages from suffering King's Port's fate. Due to his tactical brilliance and unshakable composure, he quickly rose through the ranks. He was eventually assigned to Fort Clockhaven, where an undercurrent of grief and self-doubt tempers his effective leadership.
Master-Source Backstory Facts
The total slaughter of his family and the abduction of his sister Linnaea during a kobold raid 27 years ago. The raid was orchestrated by Dreadthorn to capture slaves and engineers.
He was ten years old during the escape; he fled through an escape tunnel on bare feet over gravel, and slipped his sister’s grip during the escape.
He has an Uncle Garvick, whose forge teachings he remembers in Act 3.
The family home in King's Port has a cellar with a vertical hatch and clay tunnels beneath.
His memories are buried under military protocol (repressed), but vivid enough to surface as a full flashback in Act 1.
IV. Personality
From Doc 3. The master expresses personality through the 3 Chains and squad dynamics rather than a trait list; this section is additive and does not conflict with the master.
Core Traits: Disciplined, pragmatic [sensible, realistic, and practical rather than theoretical], and fiercely protective.
Strengths
Tactical genius: Gimbal excels at analyzing battlefield conditions and adapting plans on the fly.
Resilient leader: Even in dire situations, he inspires confidence and steadies his team.
Loyalty: His bond with his team and mastiff is unshakable, often prioritizing their safety above his own.
Weaknesses
Emotional repression: Gimbal struggles to confront his past, leading to moments of emotional detachment.
Self-sacrificial tendencies: His drive to protect others often comes at the expense of his well-being.
Haunted by failure: Flashbacks of King's Port’s destruction sometimes cloud his judgment or paralyze him at critical moments.
V. Skills & Abilities
From Doc 3.
Master Swordsman: Gimbal wields his runed cavalry sword with unmatched precision.
Master Rifleman: Gyro-Stabilized Rune Musket.
Animal Handler: His bond with Warmancer is almost telepathic, allowing seamless coordination in combat.
Tactician: He can rapidly analyze enemy patterns and exploit weaknesses.
Survivor’s Instincts: Years of fieldwork have honed his ability to navigate and adapt to any terrain or situation.
VI. Mount & Empathetic Canine Companion
Companion’s Name: Warmancer
Breed & Physical Markings: Large War Mastiff; dense, dark reddish-brown coat with diamond-shaped pure white spots across her flanks, and deep, ink-black paws.
Tactical Armor & Gear: Heavy padded leather plate-armor lined with copper-gem reinforcement rivets, steel-tipped bite-guards, and a custom saddle harness fitted with a secure boot-sheath for Gimbal’s carbine.
Empathetic Mirroring: Warmancer is Gimbal’s externalized psyche. When Gimbal represses his rising panic, Warmancer’s hackles rise, her tail goes rigid, and she lets out a low, almost silent sub-audible growl that vibrates through Gimbal’s saddle. When he freezes during flashbacks, Warmancer presses her massive 120-pound chest directly against his knees, anchor-weighting him to the present mud.
Doc 2 summary: Large War Mastiff; reddish-brown coat, white spots, black paws. (Consistent with master.)
VII. Flintlock-Fantasy Weaponry & Gear Limitations
Signature Weapon 1 (Primary): Gyro-Stabilized Rune Musket
Gemstone & Runic Focus: Blue Water Crystal (mounted in the stock recess, engraved with flow-recoil runes).
Mechanical Drawbacks: Huge physical recoil; the weapon uses the Blue gem to condense water moisture into hydraulic recoil dampening, which vents boiling, hissing clouds of scalding steam directly from the side ports after firing.
Capacity & Overheating: Stably holds exactly 10 charges per crystal. On the 11th shot, the dampener fails, and the barrel risks warping or blowing back into the shooter’s face.
Signature Weapon 2 (Melee / Sidearm): Runed Cavalry Saber
Gemstone & Runic Focus: Orange Fire Crystal embedded in the crossguard, running heat-pulse threads down the blade edge.
Overheating State: When activated, the blade pulses with white-hot thermal energy. If held active for more than two minutes, the metal begins to soften, jamming permanently into its leather-and-wood scabbard and risking a crystalline fracture of the guard.
Utility & Defensive Kit
Telepathy communication earring (paired with Rivet and Wobble)
Copper signaling mirror
Silver harmonic beacon whistle to signal cavalry maneuvers to Warmancer
Doc 2 summary: Gyro-Stabilized Rune Musket (Blue water crystal; steam-venting recoil dampener); Runed Cavalry Saber (Orange fire crystal). (Consistent with master.)
VIII. Psychological Crucibles: The 3 Chains (Flaws)
- The Chain of Repression (The Past)
Gimbal buries the total slaughter of his family and the abduction of his sister Linnaea 15 years ago beneath an icy wall of strict military protocol. He speaks of King's Port not as his home, but as a “high-priority tactical grid,” using military vocabulary to keep his grief locked in a dark room.
Doc 2 phrasing (“Armor of Repression”): Entombs horror of King's Port’s destruction and his sister Linnaea’s loss behind military protocol.
- The Chain of Toxic Hyper-Responsibility (The Present)
He carries the devastating belief that the survival of every soldier in his squad is his personal, absolute burden. He refuses to trust others’ judgment, micromanaging every scout patrol and defensive alignment because he believes any slip-up will repeat the fall of his childhood home.
Doc 2 phrasing: Believes squad survival depends solely on his vigilance, leading to micromanagement.
- The Chain of Survivor’s Guilt (The Future)
Gimbal secretly believes his childhood survival was a cowardly failure. Because he slipped his sister’s grip in the escape tunnel, he carries a quiet, desperate self-sacrificial death wish, looking for an “honorable” military sacrifice to pay his debt to the dead.
Doc 2 phrasing: Tormented by escaping the tunnel; views his survival as cowardice.
Doc 3 — Emotional Stakes in the Story
Doc 3’s parallel treatment of the same wounds, preserved as written with names normalized.
King's Port’s Shadow: Gimbal’s memories of his hometown are fragmented but vivid enough to haunt him. The mission to uncover the kobolds’ plans forces him to confront those memories and the guilt of surviving when so many others didn’t.
Leadership Under Pressure: Gimbal’s sense of responsibility weighs heavily on him. No matter how small, each failure or loss feels like a personal failure, amplifying his internal struggle.
Facing Dreadthorn: When evidence of Dreadthorn’s involvement surfaces, it ties directly to Gimbal’s past trauma. The antagonist becomes not just a threat to the kingdom but a personal reckoning for Gimbal.
IX. Character Arc
A. The 4-Act Hero’s Journey Mapping (The Crucible of Suffering) — Master
Act 1: Trouble (Shattering the Armor)
The External Trigger: The sudden mobilization orders to investigate King's Port drags Gimbal out of his safe routine at Fort Clockhaven and forces him back to the physical grave of his childhood.
Cracking the Shell: Walking through the sweltering, storm-lashed coastal border of the Jendea forces him to smell the damp wood-soot and ozone, shattering his ability to view the deployment as a simple “tactical grid.”
Act 1 Dark Night of the Soul (Nightmare / Panic): Trapped in a violent ridge-top tempest, Gimbal falls into a feverish sleep where he relives the panic of his ten-year-old bare feet sliding on tunnel gravel, waking in a screaming, hyperventilating panic, unable to recall his sister’s face or true name.
Act 2: Plans Backfire (The Failure of Strategy)
The Illusion of Control: Desperate to keep his squad safe, Gimbal coordinates a highly complex, split-force flanking maneuver to ambush a massive armored ogre in King's Port’s courtyard.
The Unraveling: The ogre’s corrupted, ground-earthed Gnoven armor absorbs Wobble’s alchemical pods. The tactical plan disintegrates instantly.
Act 2 Dark Night of the Soul (The Catastrophe): Rivet’s war mastiff is crushed and Rivet’s leg is shattered beneath the giant’s club. Smothered by the agonizing guilt that his strategy maimed his closest brother-in-arms, Gimbal isolates himself completely, sliding alone into the dark vertical hatch of the family cellar.
Act 3: Everything Seems Hopeless (The Abyss & Rebirth)
The Desolate Isolation: Locked beneath the earth by a seismic cave-in, Gimbal is stripped of his team, his spare munitions, and his light, forced to navigate the weeping clay tunnels alone.
The Ultimate Price (Shattering the Core): Cornered by a midnight-blue Skyfang warrior, Gimbal’s empty saber jams. Warmancer throws her massive body in front of the spear, taking the fatal strike meant for him. Gimbal is forced to cradle his dying hound, screaming his grief into the wet mud.
Act 3 Dark Night of the Soul (The Nadir): Sitting in the pitch-black abyss beside Warmancer’s cold body, Gimbal’s emotional armor is permanently burnt away. He accepts his vulnerability and, remembering Uncle Garvick’s forge teachings, transforms his survivor’s guilt into a sacred duty.
Act 4: Victory Against All Odds (The Let Go)
Reforged Standing: Gimbal emerges from the deep tunnels with Warmancer’s leather collar strapped to his arm—no longer a detached strategist, but a balanced, emotionally integrated leader.
Trusting the Allies: He coordinates with Wobble and the arriving militia, stepping back to let Wobble use her engineering expertise to breach the chamber rather than trying to carry the task alone.
Act 4 Dark Night of the Soul / Climactic Release: Facing his brainwashed sister Linnaea on the platform of the drilling machine, Gimbal must make the hardest choice of his life: he steps back, lets go of her hand, and trusts her free, conscious choice to sacrifice her own life force to seal the core and save Solim.
Doc 2 — Reforged Path: The total shattering of his emotional armor when Warmancer is slain in Act 3 transforms his grief into integrated leadership. (Consistent with master.)
B. Four-Beat Character Arc — Doc 3
Doc 3’s earlier, less detailed arc. Broadly compatible with the master’s trajectory but built around a different plot (Dreadthorn / kobolds) and lacking the Warmancer sacrifice and Linnaea climax.
Beginning: A disciplined but emotionally closed-off leader who views survival as his ultimate goal.
Midpoint: Gimbal begins to confront his fragmented memories of King's Port, realizing that his leadership must be rooted in more than strategy, including vulnerability and trust.
Climax: In the face of overwhelming odds, Gimbal takes a leap of faith, putting his team’s emotional bonds and ingenuity above his self-imposed isolation.
Resolution: Though the battle against Dreadthorn’s forces is far from over, Gimbal emerges as a more balanced leader, capable of protecting and connecting with those he leads.
X. Relationships, Narrative Foils & Squad Dynamics
Rivet (the Sarcastic Sharpshooter)
Master: Gimbal’s tense, silent intensity is constantly tested by Rivet’s relentless, deflective humor. Rivet is described in Act 2 as his “closest brother-in-arms”; Rivet has his own war mastiff and is paired to Gimbal’s telepathy earring.
Doc 3: Gimbal’s second-in-command and trusted partner. Though Rivet’s humor often grates on him, Gimbal values his sharpshooting skills and quick thinking. (Doc 3 gives the surname Brassnock.)
Wobble (the Chaotic Artificer)
Master: Gimbal’s need for strict, by-the-book tactical precision is constantly upended by Wobble’s volatile alchemical experiments and dwarven stubbornness. In Act 4 he steps back to let Wobble’s engineering expertise breach the chamber.
Doc 3: Gimbal admires her technical expertise and persistence, though he sometimes struggles to balance her perfectionism with the immediacy of battle. Their dynamic is marked by mutual respect. (Doc 3 gives the surname Gearforge.)
Commander Oakworth (the Pragmatic Commander) — Master only
Gimbal’s rising emotional desperation and personal connection to King's Port clash violently with Commander Oakworth’s cold, map-scale bureaucracy.
Linnaea (sister) — Master only
Abducted 15 years ago during the fall of King's Port. Gimbal slipped her grip in the escape tunnel. In Act 1 he cannot recall her face or true name. In Act 4 she appears brainwashed on the drilling-machine platform and chooses to sacrifice her life force to seal the core.
Uncle Garvick — Master only
His forge teachings are what Gimbal remembers in the Act 3 nadir, turning survivor’s guilt into sacred duty.
Dreadthorn (antagonist) — Doc 3 only
When evidence of Dreadthorn’s involvement surfaces, it ties directly to Gimbal’s past trauma; the antagonist becomes a personal reckoning. The battle against Dreadthorn’s forces is far from over at the resolution.
Warmancer
