Journey Sergeant Rivet (The Iron Eye)
Consolidated Character Document — Merge of “Chains Cha Rivet” Docs 1, 2, and 3
How to Read This Document
Chains Cha Rivet 1 is the master. Its content forms the spine of every section below and is presented first, unchanged. Material that exists only in Doc 2 or Doc 3 has been folded in where it belongs. Where a source contradicts the master, the master reading stays in the body text and the conflicting reading is preserved in a shaded VARIANT box (or a comparison table) directly beneath it, so nothing is lost and you can resolve each conflict by hand.
Per your instructions, the only edits made are to proper names for people, places, and things, normalized to the master’s Basque naming system. Everything else is carried over as written. A full list of name changes and every open inconsistency appears in Section XI: Editor’s Notes at the end.
KEY — Source key
Master (Doc 1) — full character sheet with Basque naming, 3 Chains, and 4-Act Hero’s Journey.
Doc 2 — condensed summary card; consistent with the master apart from how the flaws are labeled.
Doc 3 — prose backstory (“Rivet Brassnock: A Backstory to Deepen Emotional Stakes”); contributes the Fogscale Hold narrative, the origin of his bond with Gimbal, and an alternate climax built around enslaved prisoners and Dreadthorn. Contains the most conflicts with the master.

VARIANT — Naming notes
Doc 3 uses the English form “Rivet Brassnock” and calls Gimbal “Gimbal Cogsworth.” Both have been normalized throughout: Rivet Letoinmueska and Gimbal (Txinparta Distiratsua).
The master’s document title calls him “The Iron Eye” while his Basque title Begizorrotza is glossed as “The Sharp Eye.” Both are from the master and both are preserved.
Doc 3 describes Fogscale Hold as a gnomish settlement; the master lists his race as Errege-Jendea. Preserved in the comparison table in Section II.

II. Physical & Environmental Profile
Age & Rank: Age 23; Journey Sergeant and Lead Sharpshooter of the Oceanport County Militia.
Physical Build & Stature: Unusually tall for a Jendea soldier, standing at an imposing 1.5 meters (4’11”). He is lanky, long-limbed, and moves with a loose, slightly swaggering gait that masks his sniper’s steady center of gravity.
Physical Tolls of Campaigning: Wind-burned cheeks from years of highland scouting, with deep squintey-lines carved around his left eye from hours pressed against brass optics. His fingers are stained with yellow sulfur grease and black-powder ash. After Act 2, his left leg is completely crushed, replaced with a heavy, squeaking, brace-stabilized limb that causes him persistent, gnawing pain in the damp coastal cold.
Sensory Signatures: Smells of sharp, dry black powder, vinegar (used to clean brass), cold rainwater, and stale chicory coffee.

III. Background & History
The master carries Rivet’s history inside the 3 Chains (Section VII) and the Hero’s Journey (Section VIII). The narrative below is Doc 3’s backstory, with names normalized. Conflicts with the master are flagged beneath it.
The Tragedy of Fogscale Hold (Doc 3)
Rivet grew up in Fogscale Hold, a small gnomish settlement nestled in a misty valley renowned for its crystalline springs and mechanical ingenuity. His family were modest gearsmiths, crafting clockwork toys for children and delicate mechanical tools prized across the kingdom. Rivet always stood out as the clever, adventurous one, often climbing clock towers or venturing into the misty forests to tinker with discarded gadgets.
But life in Fogscale wasn’t without danger. The settlement bordered a series of kobold tunnel systems, and while skirmishes were rare, the kobolds’ aggression always loomed. When Rivet was 20 (a young adult by gnome standards), he joined the Fogscale Militia, tasked with patrolling the nearby tunnels. He proved an exceptional sharpshooter and scout, his precision with a black powder musket earning him early praise.
One night, during what should have been a routine patrol, the kobolds launched an unexpected and devastating raid. Rivet was stationed on an outpost when the attack began. He tried desperately to rally the militia, but the kobolds overwhelmed them. Fires consumed Fogscale Hold. Families fled into the night. Rivet saw his own parents and younger sister retreating into the mist, but he couldn’t follow. His duty was to stay at the outpost and cover their escape.
When reinforcements arrived, it was too late. Fogscale Hold was a smoking ruin. Most survivors scattered across the kingdom, and Rivet’s family was among the missing. He combed the surrounding forests for weeks, but no trace of them was ever found. It was later revealed that the kobolds had enslaved several Fogscale residents, forcing them to work in underground mines. Whether his family was among them remains unknown.
Master-Source Backstory Facts (from Doc 1)
He watched his family vanish into the burning mist of Fogscale Hold; he hears their screams in silence and the phantom horns of the Hold’s fall.
He believes he abandoned his family to cover the militia’s retreat.
He is convinced he is a coward who survived by hiding behind a rifle.
He has years of highland scouting behind him.
VARIANT — Conflicts between Doc 3 background and the master
Age at the fall: Doc 3 = 20, with Gimbal met “a few years after.” Master = age 23 now, with “years of highland scouting.” The numbers can fit (fall at 20, now 23) but leave very little room for “years” of scouting or the militia career Doc 3 describes.
What he was covering: Doc 3 = he stayed at the outpost to cover his family’s escape (duty). Master = he abandoned his family to cover the militia’s retreat. Same wound, different object.
Family composition: Doc 3 = parents and a younger sister; family possibly enslaved in kobold mines, fate unknown. Master = family only, no sister named, no enslavement thread.
Weapon at the time: Doc 3 = black powder musket. Master = the Arc-Winder Rifle is his signature weapon (no origin given).
Fogscale Militia: Doc 3 only. The master names only the Oceanport County Militia.

IV. Connection to Gimbal
From Doc 3, names normalized. Additive to the master’s squad dynamics (Section IX).
Rivet first met Gimbal a few years after the Fall of Fogscale Hold. Both had joined the Oceanport County Militia, stationed at Fort Clockhaven. Gimbal, already a rising star in the ranks, took note of Rivet’s talent with a black powder musket and uncanny ability to scout terrain. However, it wasn’t just skill that drew Gimbal’s attention—it was Rivet’s bravado, his relentless humor masking a deep pain.
Rivet admired Gimbal’s disciplined leadership and calm under pressure, qualities he felt he lacked during the chaos at Fogscale. Over time, Gimbal became not just a superior officer but a mentor and friend. The two bonded over shared losses (though Gimbal’s were still buried in his fragmented memories), often swapping stories over drinks about what they were fighting for.
Despite their camaraderie, Rivet struggled with survivor’s guilt. He sometimes questioned whether he could have done more during the Fall of Fogscale, and this doubt drove him to overcompensate in the field. Gimbal’s steady presence kept him grounded, often pulling him back when his recklessness threatened to get the team killed.

V. Mount & Empathetic Canine Companion
Companion’s Name: Thunderpaw (translated liturgically as Tximistazango)
Breed & Physical Markings: Armored War Mastiff; wire-haired, slate-grey coat with a thick, broad chest and gold-flecked intelligent eyes.
Tactical Armor & Gear: Heavy steel-and-brass plated chest guard, leather leg-splints, and a custom-hinged saddle harness designed after Act 2 to hold Rivet’s crippled leg securely without slipping during hard cavalry charges.
Empathetic Mirroring: Thunderpaw mirrors Rivet’s deflective facade. When Rivet is masking his survivor’s guilt with relentless sarcasm, Thunderpaw paces with a high-stepping, mock-proud stride, head held cockily. However, when Rivet’s bravado slips into silent panic, Thunderpaw immediately drops her ears, sits heavily on Rivet’s boots, and lets out a mournful, chest-rattling whine.
Doc 2 summary: Thunderpaw (Wire-haired, slate-grey war mastiff). (Consistent with master.)
MASTER CHECK — Internal inconsistency within the master
Section III says Thunderpaw’s saddle harness was designed after Act 2 to hold Rivet’s crippled leg, but Act 2 of the Hero’s Journey has Thunderpaw killed by the ogre’s club, and Act 4 puts Rivet on a new mount with a wheeled saddle harness. The post-Act-2 harness therefore belongs to the new mount, not Thunderpaw, unless Thunderpaw survives.
Doc 3 never mentions Thunderpaw.

VI. Flintlock-Fantasy Weaponry & Gear Limitations
Signature Weapon 1 (Primary): The Arc-Winder Rifle
Gemstone & Runic Focus: White Lightning Crystal (mounted inside a brass capacitor chamber above the lock).
Mechanical Drawbacks: Immense physical kickback that can dislocate an unbraced shoulder; the rifle requires a prolonged, high-pitched mechanical whine as the copper coils build up a lightning charge before firing.
Capacity & Overheating: Holds exactly 12 charges. If fired in rapid succession without cooling (less than 30 seconds between shots), the brass capacitor vents a blinding, static-filled blue flash that temporarily blinds the marksman and scorches the wooden stock.
Signature Weapon 2 (Melee / Sidearm): Compressed Steam Crossbow
Gemstone & Runic Focus: Dual Fire-Water Miniatures (small gems embedded in the pressure cylinder).
Overheating State: Fires short, hyper-velocity steel darts. If the pressure seals leak due to overheating, it vents scalding, 200-degree steam directly onto Rivet’s gauntleted wrist.
Utility & Defensive Kit
Self-adjusting brass ammunition belt
Precision copper-engraved telescope
Trickshot gauntlet with wind-redirection runes to nudge bullets around cover
Telepathy communication earring, paired with Gimbal and Wobble (listed in Gimbal’s master sheet)
Doc 2 summary: Arc-Winder Rifle (White lightning crystal; back-vents static-flash if rapid-fired); Compressed Steam Crossbow. (Consistent with master.)
VARIANT — Doc 3 variant
Doc 3 arms him with a black powder musket, both in the Fogscale Militia and when Gimbal first notices him. No rune weapons appear in Doc 3.

VII. Psychological Crucibles: The 3 Chains (Flaws)

  1. The Chain of Repression (The Past)

Rivet masks the agonizing memory of watching his family vanish into the burning mist of Fogscale Hold behind a constant, unbreakable wall of sarcasm, puns, and dismissive humor. He refuses to allow any conversation to grow serious because silence allows the screams of his family to echo in his ears.

  1. The Chain of Toxic Hyper-Responsibility (The Present)

Driven by the belief that he abandoned his family to cover the militia’s retreat, he constantly overcompensates in the field. He takes reckless, unnecessary sniping positions and refuses to call for cover, believing he must carry the physical danger of the entire squad to earn his place.

  1. The Chain of Survivor’s Guilt (The Future)

Rivet carries a severe, hidden inferiority complex, convinced that he is a coward who survived by hiding behind a rifle. This guilt drives him toward reckless bravado, secretly hoping a dramatic, heroic death on the battlefield will finally wash away his shame.
Doc 2 — Crucible & Flaws (as labeled there)
Survivor’s Guilt: Masks the agony of losing his family at Fogscale Hold with relentless sarcasm.
Deflective Bravado: Uses humor to hide his trauma and feelings of inadequacy.
Catastrophic Defeat: A brutal Act 2 defeat kills Thunderpaw and crushes his leg, forcing him to shed his bravado and adapt to a custom wheeled saddle-harness.
VARIANT — Labeling difference
Doc 2 uses three different headings (Survivor’s Guilt / Deflective Bravado / Catastrophic Defeat) and folds the master’s Repression content under “Survivor’s Guilt.” The master’s Hyper-Responsibility chain (reckless positions, refusing cover) has no counterpart in Doc 2. Content is otherwise compatible.

VIII. Character Arc
A. The 4-Act Hero’s Journey Mapping (The Crucible of Suffering) — Master
Act 1: Trouble (Shattering the Armor)
The External Trigger: The squad’s deployment to Waterburrow forces Rivet to look at another Jendea settlement laid waste by kobolds, dragging his suppressed trauma into the light.
Cracking the Shell: Seeing the abandoned Silverbrook Trading Post with its rusted, forced gates shatters his joke-making defense. He grows uncharacteristically quiet, his knuckles white on his Arc-Winder.
Act 1 Dark Night of the Soul (Nightmare / Panic): During the violent coastal tempest, Rivet is forced to sit in silent proximity to Gimbal’s raw trauma, his own bravado failing as he stares into the fire, hearing the phantom horns of Fogscale Hold’s fall.
Act 2: Plans Backfire (The Failure of Strategy)
The Illusion of Control: Believing his sharp-shooting precision can solve any tactical problem, Rivet takes a high, unshielded scouting position on a ruined wall to cover Gimbal’s charge.
The Unraveling: His lightning shots bounce harmlessly off the ogre’s grounded copper armor.
Act 2 Dark Night of the Soul (The Catastrophe): To save Gimbal from a fatal blow, Rivet drives Thunderpaw directly into the ogre’s path. The club smashes downward, killing Thunderpaw and pinning Rivet’s leg beneath crushing stone. He is left screaming in the mud, his identity as an agile scout shattered forever.
Act 3: Everything Seems Hopeless (The Abyss & Rebirth)
The Desolate Isolation: Trapped in a damp, decaying cellar while Gimbal descends into the dark, Rivet is physically crippled, unable to stand, and clutching his shattered leg as green corruption eats his flesh.
The Ultimate Price (Shattering the Core): Rivet must endure the agonizing death of Thunderpaw, his loyal companion who died protecting him, leaving him completely alone in his physical and mental ruin.
Act 3 Dark Night of the Soul (The Nadir): Huddled in the dark cellar, his sarcasms gone, Rivet confesses his deepest feelings of inadequacy to Wobble, admitting his terror of being useless. Through her fierce encouragement, he realizes his worth is not in his legs, but in his spirit.
Act 4: Victory Against All Odds (The Let Go)
Reforged Standing: Rivet returns to the field strapped into a custom wheeled saddle harness on a new mount, his deflective sarcasm replaced with a quiet, genuine courage.
Trusting the Allies: He coordinates with Wobble, using his sniper scope to identify the overheating weak points in the drilling machine’s core rather than trying to take the machine down with reckless solo shots.
Act 4 Dark Night of the Soul / Climactic Release: During the final chaotic battle, Rivet must hold the line against an advancing wave of Skyfangs, trusting his rifle and Wobble’s alchemical traps to cover him, completely letting go of his self-sacrificial death wish to survive for his new family.
MASTER CHECK — Internal inconsistencies within the master
Thunderpaw’s death is placed twice: Act 2 (killed by the club while Rivet drives her into the ogre’s path) and Act 3 (“The Ultimate Price”: she “died protecting him”). Act 2 also says Rivet drove her in; Act 3 says she died protecting him. Both readings preserved.
Act 3 location: Rivet is “trapped in a damp, decaying cellar while Gimbal descends into the dark.” Gimbal’s master sheet has Gimbal alone in the family cellar and tunnels after a cave-in. Which cellar Rivet and Wobble are in, and whether it is the same one, is not specified.
Leg outcome: Section II = brace-stabilized limb that squeaks and lets him ride; Act 4 = strapped into a wheeled saddle harness on a new mount. Compatible, but two different pieces of gear.

B. Climactic Emotional Stakes — Doc 3
Doc 3’s alternate climax, preserved as written with names normalized. It is built around enslaved prisoners and Dreadthorn rather than the master’s ogre, cellar, and drilling machine.
The mission to reclaim Waterburrow—the ruins of Gimbal’s old hometown—hits Rivet harder than he lets on. For him, it mirrors the tragedy of Fogscale Hold: another gnomish settlement laid low by kobolds wielding stolen technology. The discovery of enslaved gnomes in kobold-controlled tunnels reignites his deepest fears about what happened to his family.
In the climax, when the team uncovers evidence of a massive kobold operation—possibly tied to Dreadthorn’s return—Rivet’s emotions boil over. He’s torn between following Gimbal’s careful plan to gather intelligence and striking out on his own to rescue any prisoners. This creates a tense conflict between the two friends, with Gimbal accusing Rivet of letting his emotions cloud his judgment, and Rivet firing back that Gimbal’s detachment makes him cold.
The emotional turning point comes when the team discovers a group of enslaved gnomes deep in the tunnels. One of them has a gear bracelet identical to the ones Rivet’s family used to make, confirming that his sister might still be alive. Despite the overwhelming odds, Rivet convinces the team to stage a daring rescue. In the chaos, he nearly sacrifices himself to buy time for the prisoners to escape, forcing Gimbal to choose between saving his friend or continuing the mission.
How Rivet’s Arc Deepens the Story (Doc 3)
Strengthens Themes of Duty vs. Personal Cost: Rivet’s guilt over Fogscale Hold and his desire to save his family echo Gimbal’s internal struggle with his past and responsibility to his team.
Adds Emotional Complexity to the Climax: Rivet’s desperate need for redemption injects urgency and heart into the final confrontation, raising the stakes for the team’s success and survival.
Forges a Stronger Bond Between Gimbal and Rivet: Their conflict and ultimate reconciliation highlight their friendship’s depth, with each learning from the other: Gimbal from Rivet’s emotional vulnerability, and Rivet from Gimbal’s leadership.
Ties Personal Stakes to the Kobold Threat: The enslaved gnomes and corrupted technology give the conflict a visceral, personal weight, making the battle against Dreadthorn’s forces more than just a fight for survival—it’s a fight for justice.
VARIANT — Conflicts between the Doc 3 climax and the master
Shape of the climax: Master = Thunderpaw dies, leg crushed, cellar confession to Wobble, return on a wheeled harness, holds the line against Skyfangs at the drilling machine, lets go of his death wish. Doc 3 = discovers enslaved gnomes, gear bracelet points to his living sister, argues with Gimbal, nearly sacrifices himself for prisoners.
Death wish resolution: Master explicitly has him let go of self-sacrifice to survive for his new family. Doc 3 has him nearly sacrifice himself in the chaos. Opposite beats.
Antagonists: Doc 3 = kobolds and Dreadthorn. Master = kobolds are named in Act 1 as what laid waste to Waterburrow, but the on-page enemies are the ogre (grounded copper armor) and Skyfangs; Dreadthorn does not appear.
Sister: Doc 3 introduces a younger sister who may still be alive. The master has no sister for Rivet (Gimbal’s master sheet gives Gimbal a sister, Linnaea).
Wobble’s role: central to the master’s Act 3 and Act 4. Absent from Doc 3.

IX. Relationships, Narrative Foils & Squad Dynamics
Gimbal (the Stoic Leader)
Master: Rivet’s constant quips and emotional vulnerability serve as a direct, irritating foil to Gimbal’s rigid, silent military detachment. In Act 2 Rivet takes his exposed position to cover Gimbal’s charge and drives Thunderpaw into the ogre’s path to save Gimbal from a fatal blow. In Act 1 he sits in silent proximity to Gimbal’s raw trauma during the tempest.
Doc 3: Superior officer, then mentor and friend, met at Fort Clockhaven a few years after the Fall of Fogscale Hold. Gimbal’s steady presence keeps Rivet grounded and pulls him back when his recklessness endangers the team. In the Doc 3 climax they clash: Gimbal accuses Rivet of letting emotion cloud his judgment; Rivet says Gimbal’s detachment makes him cold. Full text in Section IV.
Cross-reference (Gimbal’s master sheet): Gimbal calls Rivet his “closest brother-in-arms”; Gimbal’s Doc 3 calls Rivet his second-in-command.
Wobble (the Chaotic Artificer) — Master only
His relationship with Wobble begins as a sharp, bickering rivalry (“too dwarfy” vs. “too reckless”) but deepens into profound mutual respect and silent, protective affection. She receives his Act 3 confession of inadequacy and answers with fierce encouragement; in Act 4 he works his scope in tandem with her alchemical traps.
Family — parents and younger sister
Master: His family vanished into the burning mist of Fogscale Hold; no individual members named.
Doc 3: Parents and a younger sister, modest gearsmiths making clockwork toys and tools. Seen retreating into the mist; among the missing; possibly enslaved in kobold mines. A gear bracelet found on an enslaved gnome suggests the sister may be alive.
Thunderpaw
See Section V.
Dreadthorn (antagonist) — Doc 3 only
The massive kobold operation uncovered in the climax is “possibly tied to Dreadthorn’s return”; the battle against Dreadthorn’s forces is framed as a fight for justice.

Open Inconsistencies for Manual Resolution
Title: “The Iron Eye” (document heading) vs. Begizorrotza, “The Sharp Eye” (given title). Both in the master.
Race: Errege-Jendea (master) vs. gnome / gnomish settlement (Doc 3).
Age and timeline: 23 now (master) vs. 20 at the fall, meeting Gimbal “a few years after” (Doc 3). Tight against the master’s “years of highland scouting.”
What he stayed behind to cover: the militia’s retreat (master) vs. his family’s escape (Doc 3).
Family: unnamed family (master) vs. parents and a younger sister who may be alive in kobold mines (Doc 3).
Weapon: Arc-Winder Rifle (master, Doc 2) vs. black powder musket (Doc 3).
Thunderpaw’s death: placed in both Act 2 and Act 3 of the master, with different framing (Rivet drives her in vs. she dies protecting him).
Thunderpaw’s post-Act-2 harness: Section III describes gear built after Act 2 for a dog who dies in Act 2; Act 4 gives him a new mount.
Leg gear: brace-stabilized limb (Section II) vs. wheeled saddle harness on a new mount (Act 4, Doc 2).
Climax: master (Skyfangs, drilling machine, lets go of death wish) vs. Doc 3 (enslaved gnomes, gear bracelet, near-sacrifice, Gimbal forced to choose).
Antagonists: ogre and Skyfangs (master) vs. kobolds and Dreadthorn (Doc 3). The master does name kobolds in Act 1 as Waterburrow’s destroyers.
Flaw labels: master’s three Chains vs. Doc 2’s Survivor’s Guilt / Deflective Bravado / Catastrophic Defeat; Doc 2 omits the Hyper-Responsibility chain.
Wobble: central to the master’s Acts 3 and 4; absent from Doc 3.
Act 3 cellar: unclear whether Rivet’s cellar is the same family cellar Gimbal descends from.
Cross-sheet: Gimbal’s master sheet says “Rivet’s war mastiff is crushed” in Act 2, matching Rivet’s Act 2; Gimbal’s Doc 3 makes Rivet his second-in-command, which the Rivet master does not state.
