Technology & Economy

The level of advancement in science, craftsmanship, and trade. Are there steam-powered machines, magical forges, or barter-based economies?

The technology of the Hearthkin is in its infancy. Sometimes it works, but often it doesn’t. Automatons are very rare. The militia can access various black powder muskets and pistols, while the rest of the citizenry still uses swords, daggers, bows, and the like. Goblins shun technology because they believe their own way is better. Ogres and giants lack the intelligence to use it.

Because technology is still developing, its mechanics should feel experimental, unreliable, and sometimes dangerous. Ten combat mechanics follow.

Combat Mechanics

  1. Recoil Muskets: Unlike regular muskets, these coil-loaded rifles can fire multiple rounds in succession. Overuse overheats the internal springs, however, causing misfires or explosive backfires, so engineers must constantly tweak them mid-battle.
  2. Grappling Gear-Lashers: A spring-loaded harpoon that can attach to enemies, terrain, or weapons. It pulls foes off balance, creates instant ziplines, or tangles enemy clockwork constructs. If the spring winds too tightly, it can snap and send the user flying instead.
  3. Kinetic Blade Modifications: Gimbal’s cavalry sword could have an internal piston system that adds force to his swings and lets him cleave through armor. It requires careful reloading and can jam mid-combat.
  4. Auto-Stabilizing Armor Plates: A clockwork, exoskeleton-like attachment that absorbs the shock of heavy blows by shifting tiny plates. Too many hits in a short time can lock it up and leave the wearer temporarily vulnerable.
  5. Enchantment-Powered Gauntlets: A punch-enhancing gauntlet that releases short bursts of superheated steam, stunning enemies or launching them backward. If the pressure builds too high, it can scald the user’s arm or force an emergency vent.
  6. Drones: Small clockwork flying drones (Whirligigs) that act as spotters, disruptors, or even self-destructing bombs. Because they rely on clockwork memory disks, a faulty disk could make them turn against their owner.
  7. Enchantment-Powered Crossbows: These rifle-like crossbows use compressed steam to launch bolts at high velocity and pierce armor. The pressure release valves need frequent maintenance, or the weapon risks exploding in the user’s hands.
  8. Magnetized Boots and Walls: A Hearthkin invention that lets soldiers stick to metal surfaces, such as war machines or fortress walls. Wearing them near certain enemy technology might make the wearer a magnet for thrown weapons.
  9. Unstable Enchanted Shields: Shields reinforced with retractable gears that spin and deflect incoming attacks. They require constant recalibration, and if hit too hard they can lock up or shatter.
  10. Reactive Grenades: Small clockwork bombs that can be modified on the fly, switching between flash, explosive, or gas effects depending on how they are wound. Incorrect winding causes malfunctions, sometimes triggering an unintended effect.

Equipment Using Yellow Crystals

Whispercloak (sound-dampening cape). A rune-inscribed cloak that disperses sound waves and renders the wearer nearly silent. Drawback: Movement becomes unnaturally smooth and soundless, which makes some allies uneasy.

Tempest Gauntlets (air shockwave gloves). When activated, these gauntlets release a focused burst of compressed air to knock back foes. Drawback: Useless in enclosed spaces or against very heavy targets.

Gale Boots (wind-assisted speed). These air-infused boots reduce friction, allowing bursts of enhanced speed and improved agility. Drawback: Overuse can cause a “floaty” feeling that makes precise movement harder.

Skybreaker Rifle (air-propelled kinetic musket). Fires metal projectiles with compressed air instead of black powder. Drawback: Loses effectiveness against heavily armored opponents.

Cyclone Staff (wind-control channeler). Lets the wielder generate localized wind currents, useful for deflecting projectiles or creating lift. Drawback: Hard to maintain in areas with unpredictable natural winds.

Gimbal’s Equipment

Gyro-Stabilized Rune Musket. A compact musket that uses a blue water crystal to generate high-velocity shots, with rune stabilization for precision. The embedded gyro-rune reduces recoil and compensates for movement, so Gimbal can fire accurately while mounted.

Optimum range:

  • Mid-range (50 to 150 meters): Ideal for battlefield skirmishes, allowing accurate shots while riding a war mastiff.
  • Long range (150 to 250 meters): Possible, but accuracy diminishes without additional rune enhancements.
  • Close range (under 50 meters): Can be fired in an emergency, but effectiveness drops because musket rounds are less maneuverable at that distance.

Combat applications:

  • Mounted precision shooting: Lets Gimbal eliminate enemy officers, gunners, or spellcasters while remaining mobile.
  • Suppressive fire: Rapid, controlled shots pin down foes and disrupt enemy formations.
  • Shock and ambush tactics: The musket’s near-recoilless action allows surprise attacks from elevated terrain and during charging assaults.

Drawbacks:

  • The water crystal depletes quickly and needs frequent replacement.
  • Heavily armored targets take multiple shots unless hit at weak points.
  • The muzzle-loading mechanism still requires reload time, which makes rapid consecutive close-range shots impractical.

Enchanted Greaves (Momentum Stride). Fitted with fire and water crystals, these boots release short bursts of steam propulsion. They enhance dodging, quick charges, and agility while riding a war mastiff. Drawback: Overuse leads to dangerous steam venting and risks burns.

Harmonic Beacon (war mastiff signal device). A whistle powered by a green crystal and attuned to Warmancer. It can be heard across battlefields, even underground. Drawback: It works only once per hour, and enemies may try to mimic it.

Adaptive Gauntlet (Commander’s Grip). Infused with earth magic, this gauntlet enhances grip strength and can disarm foes. Drawback: If overused, the gauntlet locks and leaves Gimbal’s hand immobile for a time.

Rivet’s Equipment

Arc-Winder Rifle (lightning-pulse musket). A modified black powder musket enhanced with a white lightning crystal that converts energy into electrically charged projectiles. The rifle’s rune array channels the crystal’s power into focused discharges, allowing highly accurate shots.

Combat applications:

  • Long-range precision: Designed primarily for sniping, the rifle fires hyper-accelerated, energy-infused shots that are deadly at long range, especially with the Rune-Etched Scope.
  • Mid-range versatility: By adjusting the rune array, Rivet can generate a spread charge, a controlled electrical burst that stuns multiple foes within a short radius. This is effective at mid-range but drains energy faster.
  • Close-range emergency use: At short range, Rivet can discharge stored lightning energy in a shotgun-like blast that stuns or repels attackers. It is a last resort, because it temporarily overloads the rifle and requires time to cool down.

Drawbacks:

  • Firing too quickly overloads the capacitor and stuns Rivet momentarily.
  • Short-range discharges risk damaging the rifle’s internal runes and require manual recalibration.
  • The lightning crystal needs recharging after extended use, so Rivet must carry spares or a portable rune-charging device.

Rune-Etched Scope. Auto-adjusts for wind and movement using a precision rune. Drawback: Fog and moisture interfere with the rune’s clarity and reduce accuracy.

Compressed Steam Crossbow. A reinforced crossbow that uses fire and water crystals to launch bolts at high velocity. Drawback: Steam pressure must be regulated constantly, or the weapon misfires.

Trickshot Gauntlet (ricochet runes). A wrist-mounted enchantment that uses air runes to let bullets bounce off surfaces. Drawback: It demands extreme precision, and miscalculations send shots wildly off target.

Self-Adjusting Ammunition Belt. Fitted with clockwork runes, this belt automatically reloads ammunition into his musket. Drawback: Prone to jamming under stress, which requires manual reloads.

Wobble’s Equipment

Multi-Function Artificer’s Wrench (Tinker’s Omni-Tool). A modular wrench that unfolds into a lockpick, screwdriver, and small welder or flamethrower. Drawback: The flamethrower sometimes sputters instead of igniting, which makes it unreliable in combat.

Steam-Powered Grapple Hook (Tether Launcher). A spring-loaded grappling hook attached to a retractable belt spool. Drawback: If overused, the gears clog, and Wobble must reset the tension spring by hand before firing again.

Volatile Alchemy Pods (custom-built grenades). Hand-built explosives with different effects: flash, concussive, or sticky fire. Drawback: If stored too long, the chemicals inside become unstable and risk accidental detonation.

Clockwork Spiderlings (miniature auto-repair drones). Small mechanical spiders that repair damaged armor or gear in the field. Drawback: They occasionally malfunction and crawl to random objects instead of what she needs fixed.

Tremor-Detector Boots (seismic awareness enhancer). These shock-absorbing boots let Wobble sense underground movement and warn her of buried enemies or hidden tunnels. Drawback: Their sensitivity makes them unreliable in cities, where vibrations from clockwork machines cause false alarms.

The Galegrinder Pistol

A pistol-sized launcher that fires alchemy pods using bursts of compressed wind from an air crystal.

Core features:

  • Air crystal power source: Generates wind propulsion for precise launching.
  • Adjustable barrel runes: Can modify the shot’s flight path.
  • Lightweight and quick-draw ready: Small enough to holster easily.

Drawbacks:

  • Overuse depletes the crystal quickly and requires frequent replacement.
  • Environmental winds may alter a pod’s flight path unexpectedly.
  • Close-range use is risky, because the launcher’s wind burst can knock Wobble backward.

Alternate Launchers for Alchemy Pods

Each launcher variant uses crystal-powered mechanics, avoiding over-reliance on unreliable steam technology.

Runed Slingshot (the “Boomshot”). Uses an air rune to launch pods silently. Drawback: Misalignment can cause weak launches.

Compressed Steam Cannon (the “Blast Puffer”). Fires pods with fire-and-water steam pressure. Drawback: Requires manual pressurization.

Gyro-Propelled Arm Cannon (the “Gear-Kicker”). A gyroscope-stabilized launcher. Drawback: Takes time to spin up, which delays shots.

Steam-Powered Mortar (the “Kettle Popper”). Uses high-pressure steam to lob pods. Drawback: Pressure instability causes misfires.

Runic Slingshot Gauntlet (the “Rune-Tosser”). Uses runes to curve shots around obstacles. Drawback: Occasionally miscalculates the flight path.
