Magic System

If magic exists, define its rules, limitations, costs, and how it interacts with the world. Is it learned, innate, or granted by gods?

The Power of Rune and Gem

Core Principles

Crystals as power sources. Each enchanted item requires a Crystalline Gem to function. These gems generate raw elemental energy and cannot function alone. They need runes to focus their power.

Runes as power conduits. Hearthkin enchanters carve runes into objects. Each rune channels, shapes, and directs the energy from the gemstone. More complex rune arrangements increase power but also risk instability, and dual-gem and multi-gem setups require master enchanters to build elaborate rune circuits.

Elements and their roles. Each crystal color carries its own element, rarity, and uses.

  • White crystals (celestial power): Ultra rare. Used for divine energy, healing, and lightning-based enchantments.
  • Yellow crystals (air power): Rare. Used for wind propulsion, levitation, speed enhancement, sound manipulation, and pressure control.
  • Green crystals (earth power): Common. Used for structural reinforcement, plant growth, and durable armor enhancements.
  • Blue crystals (water power): Uncommon. Enable hydrodynamic propulsion, cooling systems, and moisture control.
  • Orange crystals (fire power): Common. Generate heat, combustion, and pressure-based force.
  • Red crystals (blood magic): Ultra rare. Forbidden and dangerous, rumored to manipulate life force.

Gems, Runes, and Enchanters

The Hearthkin cannot use arcane magic as it is typically presented in fantasy stories. What they can do is enchant items in a variety of ways.

Crystalline Gems power all enchanted items. They come in six colors: white, yellow, green, blue, orange, and red. Tradition holds that the gems are the byproduct of the King’s creation of the races. A crystal’s color identifies the kind of power it produces. White produces celestial or divine power, green earth power, blue water power, orange fire, and red blood. The King has ordered the Hearthkin never to use the red crystals, and any red crystal that is found must be destroyed immediately.

Crystals can be found only in their natural environments. White crystals come from the heavenly realms and are scarce (typically associated with lightning effects). Green crystals are buried in the earth. Blue crystals are harvested from the ocean. Orange crystals come from the mountains, especially near volcanoes, and are harvested primarily by Mountainfolk to enchant their forges. Red crystals are the rarest of all. Most were destroyed on the King's order, and the Hearthkin consider the few that remain cursed.

The enchantment itself is a simple rune carved into the object. The user traces the rune to turn the enchantment on and off.

Despite the simplicity of the enchantments, enchanted items remain rare. Only 10 percent of manufactured items become enchanted items. Crystals are common, but only 1 percent of Hearthkin are born with the ability to become enchanters, and even they must study for at least 50 years, sometimes 100, before they can enchant. The learning is complicated. The student must see the power inside the gem, then manipulate it, control it, and channel it into, through, and out of the rune.

All Hearthkin technology fits within this elemental system. Steam-powered devices are rare, experimental, and volatile.

Yellow Crystals (Air Power)

  • Primary uses: Wind propulsion, levitation, speed enhancement, sound manipulation, and pressure control.
  • Symbolism: Air is associated with freedom, speed, and unpredictability, which suits a yellow or golden-hued crystal.
  • Rarity: Less rare than white crystals, but still difficult to refine for stable use.

Applications of Yellow Crystals

Aerial mobility and flight. Yellow crystals create airborne propulsion for small flying constructs, such as gliders, aerial drones, and airships. They enhance jump height and soften landings, allowing aerial acrobatics, and they provide limited hovering for short durations.

Enhanced speed and reflexes. Boots or armor infused with air runes can enhance speed by reducing friction and increasing agility. Subtle changes to the air pressure around the user also produce faster reaction times.

Sound and communication manipulation. Air crystals can enhance hearing by detecting subtle air vibrations, enable silent movement by dampening the sound of footsteps, and carry long-distance communication on wind-borne whispers.

Air pressure and shockwave control. They power kinetic force weapons that send air shockwaves to knock back enemies, create barriers of compressed air that act as temporary shields, and extinguish fires by forcefully displacing oxygen.

Weather and climate control. They can redirect wind currents to affect local weather and create miniature storm effects, such as tornado-like gusts or concentrated bursts of wind.

Drawbacks and Limitations

Unstable at high altitudes. Air crystals work well near the ground, but their power diminishes with altitude unless enhanced with runes.

Difficult to control. Sudden shifts in air pressure can make attacks imprecise or unpredictable. Misuse can produce wild gusts that disrupt allies as much as enemies.

Incompatible with certain runes. Some earth-based runes (stability, weight enhancement) interfere with air-based effects. Overuse may cause temporary lightheadedness or disorientation, similar to altitude sickness.

Place in the World

  • Yellow crystals sit in the mid-to-rare tier. They are not as powerful as white crystals, but they are much harder to control than earth or water crystals.
  • Air-powered technology is still experimental and less stable than fire-and-water steam engines, but it shows promise for stealth, speed, and battlefield disruption.
  • Lightweight flight technology could become a key area of research for Landfolk engineers.
