Giants
Loyal titans of the Hearthkin forces
The giants of Emberdown are towering, flesh-and-blood warriors who fight alongside the Hearthkin against the forces of darkness. Unlike their corrupted counterparts, the ogres and trolls, giants remain steadfast allies, bound by a code of honor and a deep-seated reverence for the small folk. They lack the intelligence to create or fully understand Landfolk technology, but the most trusted giants are occasionally gifted custom-built war gear by Landfolk engineers. These creations are rare and precious, and they take meticulous effort to make and maintain.
Physical Traits
- Height: average 4 meters (about 13 feet)
- Weight: 2,000–4,000 lbs
- Skin color: Ranges from deep earthen tones (gray, brown, ochre) to pale stone-like hues
- Eyes: Large and reflective, often silver, gold, or deep blue
- Distinctions: Broad, barrel-chested bodies with thick, calloused skin resembling weathered rock
Behavior and Society
- Giants live in loose clans, often in mountainous regions or on wide plateaus where they can roam freely.
- They have a simple but profound sense of honor and hold promises and oaths sacred.
- Their intelligence is limited, but they possess an innate wisdom and understanding of the natural world.
- Giants speak in a slow, booming dialect and use gestures to supplement their speech.
- They do not make weapons or armor for themselves. They rely on gifts from the Hearthkin or on their own immense strength.
Combat Abilities
Role in the Conflict
- Giants serve as living strongholds, holding the line against the hordes of ogres and trolls.
- Their boulder-hurling makes them crucial for breaking enemy defenses and disrupting formations.
- When equipped with Hearthkin-forged weaponry, a single giant can turn the tide of a battle.
- They form deep bonds with their Hearthkin allies and treat them almost like smaller siblings to be protected.
Preferred Weapons
- Massive stone clubs
- Boulders, for hurling
- Reinforced tree trunks
- Occasionally, custom Hearthkin-forged war gauntlets or shoulder-mounted artillery (extremely rare)
Fighting Style
- Brutal but strategic. Giants prefer overwhelming force but are not mindless brutes.
- They act as living siege engines, breaking enemy fortifications with sheer strength.
- They often fight in support of Hearthkin forces as mobile bulwarks against ogres and trolls.
Strengths
- Colossal strength: Can lift and throw objects as large as siege towers.
- Immovable stance: Nearly impossible to knock over once braced.
- Rock-hardened skin: Resistant to small arms and most non-magical attacks.
Weaknesses
- Slow reflexes: Giants are not quick thinkers, which leaves them vulnerable to nimble opponents.
- Limited endurance: Prolonged combat exhausts them, and they need rest between battles.
- Dependence on Hearthkin allies: They struggle against highly coordinated foes without support.
Buffs and Unique Traits
- Boulder hurling: Giants throw massive stones with pinpoint accuracy and act as living catapults.
- Mountain resilience: Their bodies naturally resist cold, wind, and exposure, so they can survive extreme environments.
- War stomp: A forceful stomp shakes the ground and knocks enemies off balance.
- Instinctive defense: Giants are not intellectual, but they have an uncanny ability to detect ambushes and sense structural weaknesses in enemy fortifications.
